Citing Sources

Citing sources appropriately is key to doing a good newspaper. All photos and information found must be cited in your blog. Each article should have the appropriate citations at the bottom of the article. You may not just copy and paste the url used. You must use proper MLA citation. EasyBib is a great site to help with that. If you have any questions, please make sure you ask Ms. Pohanka or Mrs. Redding. Remember that the key to easy citation is to do it as you go along. If you wait until the end to try to find everything, it will not work.

Remember to use Diigo to save and share your great sites. Make sure you have the diigo toolbar and then bookmark every site. Save them to our group to make sure we can see each others sites. Even if you decide not to use a site, someone else may want to use it.

Also, I found a great source on the BBC News site. Check out my demo on how to find it.

Countries

Play this game to familiarize yourself with the countries of this region.

What is News?

Before we start researching and writing, we need to discuss what news is. What kinds of stories would you like to write about? First, read this article about The Nature of News . Now, we need to explore the different kinds of news stories.

Check out the Falcon Flier and see the difference between the following categories. These are three distinct parts of a newspaper.
  • News
  • Features
  • Opinion

These are three important distinctions of stories. In your newspaper, you will need to make sure that you have all three categories to balance out your paper. In those three categories, there are also smaller subcategories. Look at these types:

Now that you have looked at different kinds of news stories, it is time for you to start researching to find stories that interest you. Tomorrow you will work with your group to decide what stories you will do for your paper. Come to class prepared to discuss your ideas.
